Looking to God

Psalm 16:8

I'm sure many of us have heard the hymn "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus" but it's not always that easy is it? The world we are surrounded in is full of distractions, you want to go read your Bible but then you end up watching TV. You wake up to pray but you end up falling asleep again. You begin to wonder "Is it worth it?"

The resounding answer from this passage is YES! The Psalmist knew that he would not be shaken with God on His side. We can have that promise too if we fix our eyes on Jesus. But how do we do this practically?

1. Give God the best part of your day. This is different for everyone because everyone is different. Give Him the time you are most awake this prevents us from falling asleep when trying to study the Bible or pray. It also is part of putting God first.

2. Guard this time with your life. have an answer ready for when temptation comes along to do something else, preferably from Scripture. Philippians 4:13 is a good place to start.

3. Integrate Scripture into your everyday life. Be it through emailed Bible verses and devotions, scripture as your wallpaper on you phone or on you wall. Think on the verses you read. Think on God in every moment, discuss every problem with Him.

4. Start off slow. It takes practise to fix our eyes on God at all times. Start by giving as much time as you can give and gradually increase it. Going all out at first will result in burn out.

5. Remember the rewards for having the relationship with God. With Him at your side you "will not be moved." (KJV). Reflect upon the words of "Turn your eyes upon Jesus"
